Franz Schmidt Dolls 1890-1937 German

Franz Schmidt founded his doll company in Georgenthal, Thuringia, Germany in 1890, the Simon & Halbig company supplied the bisque heads designed specifically for their dolls.  Franz Schmidt was very innovative in the doll industry providing many improvements such as; improved wood joints, pierced nostrils (called breathers), movable tongue, eye bar and doll voice boxes.

Franz Schmidt mold 1295 doll faceFranz Schmidt made Dolly face, Character Baby and Character Dolls, all of whom are of very high quality, sometimes a z is found in the marking, this is believed to stand for - zentimeter.

Early Franz Schmidt dolls were marked: S & Co., Simon & Halbig, Made in Germany, later marking is: FS, F. S. & C, F. S. & Co, Simon & Halbig, plus a mold number on back of head, body may also have ink stamp: F. S. & C.

Shown on left, mold # 1295, doll is 17" tall, bisque head, composition jointed body, flirty eyes, open mouth.

On right, is the Franz Schmidt, F. S & Co. marking on a doll mold # 1272.

Note: and possibly other mold numbers.  #1255 has been found as a black bent limb Character Baby doll.
