Schoenau & Hoffmeister Dolls 1901-1953 German

The Schoenau & Hoffmeister porcelain factory, also known as Porzellanfabrik Burggrub, was located in Burggrub, Germany near Kronach, Bavaria was founded by Arthur Schoenau and Carl Hoffmeister in 1901. By 1907 the two partners were in disagreement of the type of porcelain heads for their dolls.  Hoffmeister insisted on producing shoulder head dolls, while Schoenau wanted to produce socket head dolls.  Unable to resolve there differences Carl Hoffmeister left and Arthur Schoenau became the sole owner.

S star PB H marking for SchoenauIn 1911 Arthur passed away and his son Hans Schoenau took over as director of the company.  Sometime later Arthur's widow Caroline and son Curt Schoenau took over the directorship.  It was Curt who supplied the sculptor Carl Schneider with a photo of Princess Elizabeth that was used for their famous Princess Elizabeth doll. Schoenau & Hoffmeister dolls were often dressed in regional costumes.

Some of their trademark names were: Bébé (Bebe) Carmencita, Burggrub Baby, Das Lachende (DALABA - The Laughing Baby), Hanna, Kunstlerkopf (art head doll), My Cherub, Princess Elizabeth and Viola and Arthur Schoenau registered doll marks; AS, ASS, MD. 

Schoenau & Hoffmeister also made bisque doll heads for Edmund Edelmann marked SPBH Mona, Melitta or Mine

and Ernst Liebermann doll named Violet and possibly Eli.

1910 + Character Baby or Toddler Doll - 12-30" tall, bisque socket head, composition jointed body with bent limbs, wigged, glass eyes, open mouth. 

Usually marked:  S star symbol with P B inside H, Porzellanfabrik Burggrub, 169, 170, 769, 900, 914, Special, Burggrub Baby.

ca. 1925 Solid Dome Infant Doll - 10-14" tall, bisque flange neck, cloth body, composition limbs, painted hair, small glass sleep eyes, closed mouth. 

Usually marked:  N.K.B, with or without a German stamp.

Hanna, Character Baby Doll  - 14-26" tall, bisque socket head, composition bent limb jointed body, wigged, large glass eyes, painted lashes, painted feathered brows, open smiling mouth with teeth. 

Usually marked:  S star symbol with PB inside H, Hanna.

1929 Princess Elizabeth Doll - 14-24" tall, bisque socket head, jointed composition body, blonde mohair wig, blue sleep eyes, open smiling mouth with upper teeth.
