Mattel Dolls 1960s

1959-1976 Mattel Barbie doll family & friends, various sizes, see Barbie Dolls for details.  All the dolls in this series, also fashions, gift sets and miscellaneous.

1960-1965 Mattel Chatty Cathy doll family, Chatty Cathy, 20" tall, vinyl and plastic doll.  There were quite a few dolls in this series over the years.  Was also sold in Canada, through a licensing agreement with Reliable Toys & Dolls in the 1960s. 

1961 Mattel Sister Belle the talking girl doll, 16" tall, red stuffed cloth body with lower arms flesh colored and plastic painted face, yellow yarn hair with bangs and ponytail, battery operated pull string talker; she says 11 phrases:  1. It's time to eat.  2. Let's play house. 3. Sing me a song. 4. Please take me with you. 5. Is it bedtime?  6. Do you like me?  7. I'm glad to be your friend.  8. Will you play with me?  9. Let's draw a picture.  10. I love you.  11. I think you're nice., was wearing a cotton blue and white diagonal ^ striped dress with appliquéd red mittens on front, red short sleeve shirt and black cotton shoes, doll marked on neck; Mattel Inc. Hawthorne, CALIF. as shown below.

1961 Mattel Matty the talking boy doll or Matty Mattel doll, 16" tall, stuffed cloth body and plastic face with painted features, short orange yarn hair, pull string talker that says 11 phrases like Belle, was Sister Belle's companion doll and along with other cartoon characters used in Mattel commercials during this era. Is wearing red and white striped shirt with black shorts and white tennis shoes and a felt crown shaped hat, doll marked on neck; Mattel Inc. Hawthorne, CALIF. as shown below.

1962-1964 Mattel Chatty Baby doll, 18" tall, part of the Chatty Cathy family of dolls, hard plastic jointed body with vinyl head and rooted hair.

1963 Mattel Casper the Friendly Ghost doll, 16" tall, comic character by Harvey Comics, plush stuffed fur body with red name on front, hard plastic face with painted features, closed mouth, pull string talker, marked 1962 Mattel Inc. Hawthorne Calif.

There was supposedly a companion doll named Wendy the Good Little Witch doll, also a Harvey Comics character, but we've never found the doll, an ad or anything to indicate she was actually produced.

1963-1964 Mattel Charmin' Chatty doll, 24" tall, part of the Chatty Cathy family of dolls, hard plastic jointed body with vinyl head and rooted hair, black eyeglasses.

1963 Mattel Shrinkin Violette doll often referred to as Shrinking Violet doll, 17" tall, stuffed cloth doll, talker with pull string, eyes and mouth moved when she talked, printed face with blue eyes, yellow yarn pigtail hair with violet ribbons, violet dress, white socks and black mary jane shoes that are (I think) non-removable. 1963-1964 Mattel Tiny Chatty Baby doll or Tiny Chatty Brother doll, 15" tall, all vinyl, white or black doll, rooted hair, sleep eyes, two upper teeth showing, talker, wearing an aqua jumper with attached white bib with dolls name embroidered in aqua, marked on back: Tiny Chatty Baby Tiny Chatty Brother 1962 Mattel INC. Hawthorne Calif. USA US Pat 3,017,187 Other US & Foreign Patents Pending Patented in Canada 1962.  Part of the Chatty Cathy family of dolls.

1964-1966 Mattel Baby Cheryl doll, 17" tall, part of the Chatty Cathy family, vinyl head and partial slightly bent limbs, short rooted blond hair, sleep eyes with real upper eyelashes, closed slight smiling mouth, jointed at neck, shoulder and hips, cloth body with talking mechanism in tummy, doll mark has cloth label sewn into a body seam with dolls name as shown below

1964 Mattel Baby Pattaburp doll, 16" tall, soft body with vinyl head and rooted hair.

1964 Mattel Dee Dee doll, 15" tall, rooted hair, painted eyes, jointed body.

1964-1967 Mattel Patters Pillow doll, 18" tall, cloth pull string talker, think there were several dolls in this series, should have a tag sewn into side that identifies the doll.

1964 Mattel Scooba Doo doll, 23" tall, rooted platinum hair, black cloth body with voice box  & flesh colored elbows to hands, talker, painted eyes with real lashes, dressed in a striped a line dress.

1964 Mattel Swingy doll, 17" tall, hard plastic jointed body with vinyl head and rooted hair.

1964 Mattel Timey Tell doll, 17" tall, all vinyl, rooted blonde hair, has a watch, talker doll.

1965-1967 Mattel Baby First Step doll or Mattel Talking Baby First Step doll, 18" tall, battery operated talker and walker, rooted hair, sleep eyes. Unsure if she is shown in original outfit.

1965 Mattel Herman Munster doll, 21" tall, talking hand puppet or full soft body doll, green vinyl head and hands, cloth stuffed body.

1965 Mattel Singing Chatty doll, 17" tall, part of the Chatty Cathy family of dolls, came with blonde or brunette hair, sleep eyes, closed smiling mouth, shown in her original red dress, replaced socks, shoes & hair ribbon.

1966 Mattel Baby Secret doll, 18" tall, soft baby body with vinyl head and rooted hair, open mouth.

1966-1967 Mattel Cheerful Tearful doll, 7 or 13" tall, vinyl with rooted hair, changes faces happy or sad.

1966 Mattel Patootie doll, 16" tall, stuffed cloth body, pull string talker, vinyl head and hands, painted facial features of a clown, came with an additional "sad" mask, marked with tag sewn into side with Patootie on label and 1965.

1967-1968 Mattel Baby's Hungry doll, 17" tall, soft vinyl with rooted hair, battery operated, eyes move and mouth chews.

1967 Mattel Baby Whisper doll, 16" tall, pull string talker, marked 1967 Hong Kong.

1967 Mattel Buffy doll, Mrs. Beasley doll, a TV character from the 1960s TV show Family Affair played by Anissa Jones, Buffy with her tiny Mrs. Beasley cloth doll, see the 6 1/4" Buffy & Mrs. Beasley page for details. 

The 11" tall Buffy doll has a vinyl head with rooted hair in pigtails, painted blue eyes, freckles, open mouth, she's a pull string talker, doll is marked 1967 Mattel Inc. U.S. & For. Pats. Pend.  Mexico.  Carrying her Mrs. Beasley cloth doll with a vinyl head who is 4 1/2"

1967 Mattel Mrs. Beasley doll, 16" tall, cloth doll, with vinyl head rooted hair, painted eyes, black eyeglasses, closed smiling mouth,  just like the tiny one carried by the Buffy doll from the 1960s TV show Family Affair.

1967 Mattel Randi Reader doll, 19-20" tall, talker doll, recites nursery rhymes.

1967 Mattel Sister Small Talk doll, 10 1/2" tall, blonde rooted hair, the one pictured MIB and is Canadian.

1967 Mattel Teachy Keen doll, 16" tall, pull string talker doll, says several phrases, think she is part of the Drowsy family, HTF

1967 Mattel Tippee-Toes doll, 17" tall, plastic jointed body with vinyl head and rooted hair, doll mark 1967 Mattel, Inc. Hawthorne, Calif. Made in USA.

1968 Mattel Baby Fun doll, 7 1/2" tall, vinyl head with blond bubble-cut curly hair, painted eyes, open mouth, jointed body.  Came with party accessories; balloons, noise maker, horn, bubble pipe, was dressed in a yellow and orange a-line dress with cap sleeves with scalloped ends, with hot pink flowed appliqués.  Doll mark on neck 1968 Mattel, Inc. Hong Kong and marked on back: Patent Pending 1968 Mattel Inc. Hong Kong.

1968 Mattel Bouncy Baby doll, 11" tall, doll marked on neck 1968 Mattel, Inc. and on back; Mattel, Inc. Mexico Hong Kong.

1968 Mattel Swingy doll, 20" tall, battery operated doll, came with record and Mattel Tiny Swingy doll, 11 1/2" tall, also battery operated doll, marked 1967 Mattel Inc.

1968 Mattel Valerie doll, 10 1/2" tall, vinyl and plastic, rooted blonde hair, painted blue eyes, marked 1967 Mattel, Inc. Hong Kong.

1969-1971 Mattel Dancerina doll, 12", 16", or 24" tall, dancing doll in pink tutu tallest one 24" on the left in photo, all are battery operated dolls.

1969 Mattel Dancerella doll, 18" tall, is shown in middle of photo, wearing a white and pink tutu, red plastic crown when pulled the doll danced.

1972 Mattel Baby Dancerina doll, 11-12" tall, wears the green and silver tutu in photo at bottom right, doing the splits.

1969 Mattel Baby Go Bye-Bye and Her Bumpety Buggy doll, 11" tall, hard plastic and vinyl head with rooted hair, doll sits in an orange and yellow plastic car, battery operated doll.

1969 Mattel Baby Tender Love Talks doll, 15" tall, drink wet type, a non-posable stuffed body, rooted blonde hair with pink vinyl bow on top of head, pull string talker, says; Kiss Baby, Go Bye Bye, Da - Da Daddy, Night - Night, Mama Mama and she giggles.  Wore a printed cotton shift dress with white shoes. 

1969 Mattel Dick Van Dyke doll, 25" tall, talker, maybe based on the character, Caractacus Potts played by Dick Van Dyke in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang movie in 1968.

1969 Mattel Hi Dottie doll, 17" tall, tall, hard plastic jointed body with vinyl head and blonde rooted hair, brown painted eyes.

1969 Mattel Myrtle doll, 14" tall, pull string talker, cloth stuffed body, plastic face and hands, painted facial features, big wide open mouth, yellow yarn pigtail hair, dressed ina peach printed dress with white apron and chartreuse ric rak trim.

1969 Mattel Sketchy doll, 19" tall, hard plastic jointed body with vinyl head and rooted hair, sleep eyes, open mouth.
