Ideal 1959 Patti Playpal 35″ doll & Ideal 1960 Peter Playpal Doll 38″ faces

Ideal’s 1959 Patti Playpal is a life sized companion doll with a vinyl head and rooted hair, sleep eyes, closed mouth, a jointed body that Ideal used the new technology of  blow molded vinyl to create.  This technology is what makes her light weight enough for a young child to hold or walk the doll and she is the size of a three year old child at 35″ tall.

The American doll companies from 1960 to 1963 were all about making Big dolls.  All the Ideal playpal dolls are well marked,  the 1959 Ideal Patty Playpal doll is marked Ideal Doll Toy Corp. G-35 or B-19-1, the 1960 Ideal Peter Playpal is marked © Ideal Toy Corp. E-35-38.

All the Ideal playpal family of dolls were designed by Neil Estern, a freelance artist, so they could wear real children’s sized clothing.

Why are so many life sized companion dolls, that look just like Patti, but are unmarked or not marked Ideal?

** “Ideal sold the body molds to American Character in October 1962 and they proceeded to make their multi-jointed Betsy McCall (doll).

Later, the bodies were sold to Empire-Crossman Plastics Moulds Co. Inc. and they apparently sold (the molds) abroad – The information is courtesy of the public library and these men who were involved with toy research and development – James Goldberg, Lonny Houseman and Ira Goinhorst” .

** Excerpt from the Modern Collector’s Dolls book, eighth series (1996), page 191 by Patricia R. Smith.

It would appear that it wasn’t just the Patti body mold that was sold to other doll companies, likely Patti head molds too, based on the number of near look a like companion dolls found unmarked or with markings other than Ideal.
