Playpal Type Life Sized Companion Dolls
The 1959 Ideal Patti playpal doll is a life sized companion doll who is 35″ tall. All the Ideal Patti playpal dolls are marked; the 1959 Patti playpal non-walker doll is marked Ideal Doll Toy Corp. G-35 or B-19-1, the 1960 to 1961 Patti walker doll is marked Ideal Doll G 35, the 1960 Peter playpal is marked © Ideal Toy Corp. E-35-38.
Patti and Peter playpal dolls have vinyl heads with rooted hair, sleep eyes, a closed mouth, a jointed body that was created using the new technology of blow molded plastic. This technology is what makes the doll light weight enough for a young child to hold or walk a doll who is the same size as a three year old child.
From 1960 to 1963 the American doll companies were all about making Big dolls. All the Ideal playpal family of dolls were designed by Neil Estern, a freelance artist and because of their large size they can wear real children’s sized clothing.
The history of Why are so many Patti Playpal life sized companion dolls unmarked or not marked Ideal?
** “Ideal sold the body molds to American Character in October 1962 and they proceeded to make their multi-jointed Betsy McCall (doll).” Later, the bodies were sold to Empire-Crossman Plastics Moulds Co. Inc. and they apparently sold (the molds) abroad – The information is courtesy of the public library and these men who were involved with toy research and development – James Goldberg, Lonny Houseman and Ira Goinhorst”. Patricia R. Smith, author.
It would appear that it wasn’t just the Patti body mold that was sold to other doll companies, likely Patti head molds too based on the number of near look a like large companion dolls found unmarked or with markings other than Ideal.
