A & H Vintage Dolls Identified 1947+ USA

The A & H Doll Manufacturing Corporation of New York City, are best known for their small hard plastic dolls sized 6″ to 12″ tall, made from 1947 until the 1970s.  Hard plastic dolls were considered rather expensive to produce – the 7 1/2″ tall 25th Century Space Cadet dolls in the 1952 Sears Christmas catalog cost $1.87 each to purchase. 

Today collectors enjoy A & H Doll Manufacturing’s historically dressed dolls; bride and groom dressed dolls, cowboy or cowgirl and space cadets dolls plus others, all on A & H dolls which today can be found at a reasonable value.  When adding to a doll collection, a small sized doll takes up little room, so you can . . . collect them all.

Vintage 1950s A and H Dolls Identified

 1952 The Doll of Destiny,

Molly Pitcher doll 12" tall

1952+ A & H  Molly Pitcher The Doll of Destiny 12″ tall Donna doll, all hard plastic, mohair wig, sleep eyes with molded lashes, closed mouth, jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips, oil cloth shoes with ties, socks, non-removable detailed historical costume, usually with attached slip, petticoat, pantaloons and hat, Donna dolls are unmarked, box has Doll of Destiny and dolls name on it, first known hard plastic dolls dressed in authentic historical costumes. Twelve dolls in The Doll of Destiny series; Priscilla Alden, Marie Antoinette, Queen Elizabeth I, Empress Eugenie, Elizabeth Woodville Grey, Queen Isabella, Empress Josephine, Mary Todd Lincoln, Molly Pitcher, Betsy Ross, Queen Victoria and Martha Washington.

A & H 1952 Donna doll 12" tall

1952+ A & H  Donna doll 12″tall a dressed display doll, all hard plastic, mohair wig, sleep eyes with molded lashes, jointed at the neck, shoulders and hips, non-removable clothing Donna dolls were sold as brides, in fancy gowns and other outfits, Donna dolls are unmarked,

1950s A & H Marcie Sluggo & Nancy dolls 8"

ca. 1950 A & H Marcie Nancy and Sluggo Smith dolls, 7 1/2″ tall, box front names the dolls “Sluggo and Girl Friend, designed by Marcie“, dolls were a promotional from Post Grape-Nut cereal and represent the comic characters of Nancy & Sluggo from Ernie Bushmiller’s comic strip. 

All hard plastic dolls with jointed body, sleep eyes, Nancy has a glued on short curly dark caracul wig, Sluggo’s hair is painted black, she wears a black felt vest with three white buttons on front, white blouse and orange skirt, orange hair ribbon and tiny painted black slip-on type shoes, Sluggo has a black jacket, red and white knit shirt, pale blue jean type pants with a patch on his knee, painted shoes and red cap. Sold and boxed by A & H Sluggo, Nancy dolls are unmarked, made by PMA.

1953 A & H Gigi doll 8"

1955 A & H Gigi doll  8″ tall, all hard plastic, head turning walker, Ginny look a like, short rooted hair, sleep eyes, closed mouth, jointed toddler body, bare feet, dressed in a pink organdy dress, bonnet, purse, shoes and socks, fashions available separately, Gigi dolls are marked Gigi or U.  

1957 A & H Gigi’s Lil Sister baby doll 8″ tall is all vinyl has molded hair, sleep eyes, a drink n’ wet open mouth, five piece jointed bent limb baby body, Gigi’s Lil Sister doll marked Gigi’s Lil Sister.

1957 A & H Julie walker doll 8"

1957+ A & H Julie walking doll 8″ tall,  I walk, I sit, I sleep, dress me, curl my hair Julie’s box reads.  Julie is all hard plastic jointed walker body, glued on wig, sleep eyes, closed mouth, bae feet, separate fashions available that fit other 8″ tall dolls with gripper snaps and “Rau Sklits” on them.  A & H Julie doll is unmarked.

1961+ A & H Birthstone Belle or Belles in Bells dolls 8" tall

1961+ A & H Birthstone Belle doll or Belles in Bells doll 8-9″ tall

1961+ A & H Belles in Bells, Birthstone Bell dolls, Teens in Bells, Gigi in Bells, Lil Sister in Bells dolls 7 1/2″” tall, *Winner of 1961 Silver Award for original bell packaging, the clear plastic bell is 9″ tall.   Dolls are jointed at the neck and shoulders only with stationary straight legs, molded painted shoes, sleep eyes, mohair glued on wig.  These are basically a Dress Me doll which were intended to be Display dolls, not meant to be played with.  On the bottom of the bell is the company name A & H and A Marcie doll on it, dolls are unmarked.

1961+ A & H Birthstone Belle dolls 8″ tall, (shown left in red January Garnet Birthstone Belle), each doll was named after a month and the associated birthstone ie. January – Garnet, February – Amethyst and so on, each dressed accordingly. A & H Birthstone Belle dolls are unmarked.
