Dame Barbara Mary Quant (b. 1930 – d. 2023) a British fashion designer and icon, opened the doors of her new boutique “Bazaar” on King’s Road in London, England in 1955 with her husband Alexander Plunket-Greene. Her clothing fashions were unique for the time period in that they did not mimic a teenager / young adult’s parents clothes. Clothing was fresh, in different designs like miniskirts and hot pants.
The models that wore the new designs were Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy, Verushka and Mary Quant herself who was the same age. This became the mod Street Fashion clothes of the 1960s to 1970s in London, England.
1973+ Mary Quant Daisy doll is 9″ tall, has long blonde rooted hair in several shades plus other hair colors, blue painted eyes and blue eye shadow, a closed mouth and a jointed plastic body, doll marked © MODEL TOYS LTD, HONG KONG on upper back or lower waist. Daisy dolls mod clothes wardrobe reflected the designs Mary Quant made popular. The Daisy doll shown above, is wearing a 1974 #35411 a dressed doll or single outfit #60004 Bees Knees consisting of a horizontal striped yellow and red two piece top and pants, red plastic heeled shoes, a posing stand and My Fashion Diary booklet showing other fashions available.
The black and white logo that Quant’s clothing line used was a Daisy symbol and is the name she gave to her doll. Daisy was made from 1973 to 1983 by Gabriel © or Model Toys LTD., Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Model Toys LTD., in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong or Flair Toys Ltd., Ash Road, Wexham, Clwyd, LL13 9UG Great Britain or Flair Toys Ltd., in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong.
Mary Quant’s Daisy doll wardrobe was designed for an around the world trip, so outfits are named for the location visited i.e. London, Moscow etc. and then given a title and were manufactured in Hong Kong. Daisy was probably sold in JC Penney stores in the USA, as Quant’s clothing line was sold there from 1962+. The Quant Daisy doll was sold throughout Europe, Canada and elsewhere.
