Aich, Menzel Dolls – In 1848 Aich Porzellanfabrik was founded in Aich near Karlsbad an Austrian porcelain factory, by 1870 M. J. Moehling became the owner.  In 1893 the firm name was changed to A.C. Anger, k.u.k., that same year the new owner A.C. Anger passed away.

The company appears to have changed owners a few more times and finally by 1918 the company was known as Aich, Menzel & Company GmbH. or Aich Porzellanfabrik, the new owner partners were Josef Theodor Menzel, Leo Höhnel and Eduardo Juan of Spain.

1918 is also when the company first began to produce bisque head dolly face dolls, most with jointed composition bodies. Note: Aich, Menzel’s doll mold 1904 is not the year the head was made, it was made after 1918+. The Aich, Menzel doll mark A & M is often mistaken for Armand Marseille, so collectors refer to this company as Austria’s A & M doll mark.

Carl Knoll built his first porcelain factory called Karlsbad Porzellanfabrik in 1842 at Fischern, Germany near Karlsbad which was then located in Bohemia and the border of Austria. Today the city of Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) is located in the Czech Republic. In 1886 Knoll claimed he had the finest porcelain slip and clay, which he sold to other German companies.  Knoll is probably best known for their many porcelain dinnerware products found today.

In 1905 Knoll registered three bisque or porcelain doll molds 293, 701, 1906. Carl Knoll used the doll mark CK intertwined initials, sometimes with Karlsbad, Austria. Carl Knoll dolls are not easily found, even today with the Internet at the tips of our fingers.
