Cosmopolitan Doll Company Ginger Dolls 1949+

The Cosmopolitan Doll Company (CDC) of Jackson Heights, NY USA  was founded by Kathryn Kay, a former sales representative for the Vogue Doll Company. 

Cosmopolitan produced a number of  hard plastic and vinyl dolls during the 1950s.  They are best known for their Ginger doll who was produced from the same plastics manufacturer – Commonwealth Plastics Corporation –  as Vogue’s Ginny doll and Doll Bodies, Inc. Lingerie Lou doll.

1956 Cosmopolitan Ginger doll #1701 gift set

1954+ Cosmopolitan Ginger doll, 7 1/2-8″ tall, all hard plastic, early dolls wigged, painted upper eyelashes, large sleep eyes usually blue, closed mouth, jointed body with straight non-walker legs with a wide stance. The Ginger dolls are unmarked.

ca. 1955+ Cosmopolitan Ginger doll 7 1/2-8″ tall, all hard plastic, glued on wigs, (#2 with smaller eyes) with molded eyelashes, (#3 with medium eyes) straight legs non-walker or walkers, some bent knee walker dolls and may have (#4 wide eyes with jointed elbows too), these Ginger dolls are unmarked.

The Ginger doll has a lined and stitched saran wig, wears panties, socks and shoes, doll clothing was sold separately. Some special Ginger dolls came with pastel colored wigs ca. 1955-1960s like the Virga Lolly Pop dolls.

In 1956 Cosmopolitan’s Ginger doll has a vinyl head and is marked Ginger on the back of the neck. Ginger dolls were sold to many other manufactures who then redressed and resold the dolls under their own name.  Beside a large clothing wardrobe there were other Ginger doll accessories such as; hats, stands, wigs, skates and shoes, books, luggage, gift sets, a cardboard house, patio and lawn furniture. 

Some of the Ginger outfits were; nurse outfit, (3) Mouseketeer costumes; Talent Roundup, Mickey Mouse sweater and Mousekarade that each included a Mickey mouse mask.  Also a  Davy Crockett, Mexican outfit, Disney Costumes, Girl Scout and Brownie costumes, fairy’s, ballerina, ice skating, roller skating, brides and bridesmaids, princess, space girl, rocket pilot, formal gowns, beach clothes a majorette and a fireman and many others. Ginger doll clothing is tagged Fashions for Ginger Cosmopolitan Doll & Toy Corp. Jackson Heights, N.Y.

1956-1957 Cosmopolitan Mindy doll, 7 1/2 – 8″ tall, sold by Active Corporation, used a Ginger doll head mold.

1957 Cosmopolitan Baby Ginger doll 8"

1956+ Cosmopolitan Baby Ginger doll, 8″ tall, sister of Ginger, soft vinyl head with lightly painted molded hair, painted eyes and eyelashes, jointed bent limb leg body, doll marked on back of neck Baby Ginger. Cosmopolitan Baby Ginger with rooted hair and sleep eyes, a jointed drink n’ wet body, doll marked Baby Ginger or unmarked. Baby Ginger doll with sleep eyes was also sold as a mail-in premium by Kellogg’s.

1957 Cosmopolitan Cha Cha Heel Ginger doll 8"

1957+ Cosmopolitan Cha Cha Heel Ginger doll, 8″ tall, “Ginger Grows Up, The First 8″ Doll with the all new Cha Cha heel” her ad states, vinyl head with rooted hair, sleep eyes, hard plastic head turning walker body, jointed at neck, arms and hips, medium heeled feet. 

This doll is rare, the High heeled Little Miss Ginger doll was more popular, doll marked on bottom of feet and on her shoes Ginger.

1957 Cosmopolitan Little Miss Ginger doll 8"

1957+ Cosmopolitan Little Miss Ginger doll, 8″ tall, vinyl head rooted hair, sleep eyes, rigid vinyl body, teen type fashion doll with high heel feet, jointed at neck, arms and hips, doll marked Ginger on bottom of dolls feet, on bottom of the high heel shoes and on clothing tags.

1957 Cosmopolitan Miss Ginger doll 10 1/2"

1957+ Cosmopolitan Miss Ginger doll, 10-10 1/2″ tall, Little Miss Revlon like competitor, has a vinyl head with rooted hair, sleep eyes, vinyl teen type fashion body, jointed at the neck, shoulders, waist and hips with high heeled feet, pierced ears and painted finger nails, doll marked on head Ginger.  Miss Ginger doll, outfits usually included a dress, silk stockings, high heel shoes and jewelry.

1957 Cosmopolitan Skippy the Chimp CBS TV star doll 8″ Ginger’s playmate

1957+ Cosmopolitan Skippy the Chimp doll 8″, CBS TV star and Ginger’s playmate, all vinyl doll with molded painted hair on head and jointed body, jointed at neck, shoulders and hips, brown plastic sleep eyes, molded plastic upper eyelashes, open closed mouth, Zippy came dressed in a red jacket with the name ZIP imprinted on the left shoulder and white thread bound edges, a red and white rope tie closure, red pull-on pants and red felt slip-on slippers with white pom-poms on each toe. Zippy the Chimp doll is unmarked. Cosmopolitan Zippy the Chimp doll was only made for a short time and had his own six outfits available separately.
