Googly Eye Antique Dolls Identified 1892+

ca. 1912 German Schieler googly eye doll 13" face
ca. 1912 German antique Schieler googly eye doll 13″ face marked Schieler

Goo goo eye, Googlie Eye, Googly Eye, Googly Eyed, Googly Eyes or Ogling eyes are all terms used to describe the side glancing and sometimes side rolling eyes of these charming dolls.  Googly eye dolls have been made from antique to modern times, always with eyes slyly glancing to the side. The Googly term is thought to have originated from the German words “Guck Augen” which translates to “ogling eyes that move to one side”.

The German word Schieler probably describes dolls with googly eyes and is found in German catalog descriptions and incised on some Googly dolls. Googly dolls can be a few inches tall to to a whopping 22″ but most googlies are under 12″ tall. Googly dolls are very desirable, highly valued by doll collectors and are reproduced by doll hobbyists and artists.
